Procedure Steps
Select lesion type and location to begin
Tip: Always biopsy the most suspicious area including some normal tissue.
Oral Cancer Biopsy Simulation Guide
This interactive simulation demonstrates proper techniques for performing biopsies of potentially malignant oral lesions.
Key Learning Objectives:
- Identify suspicious oral lesions requiring biopsy
- Select appropriate biopsy technique based on lesion characteristics
- Practice proper biopsy procedural steps
- Understand tissue handling for pathological examination
- Recognize anatomical considerations for different oral sites
Biopsy Types:
Incisional: Removing a portion of the lesion (for large lesions or high suspicion of malignancy)
Excisional: Complete removal of the lesion (for small lesions <1cm)
Punch: Circular tissue sample (useful for homogeneous lesions)
Brush: Non-invasive cellular sample (screening only, requires follow-up)
Clinical Pearls:
- Always include normal tissue margins in the biopsy
- Avoid necrotic centers - sample the advancing edge
- For large lesions, take multiple samples from different areas
- Proper orientation is crucial for the pathologist
- Document location, size, color, texture, and duration of lesion
