“The Cell with Cold!!!” ……The Mucous Cells….
Secretory cells are amazing by the fact that they are the production houses of the most useful body fluid, the “saliva!” …Just imagine your mouth as a dry “draught land” with no water!!! This dreaded thought itself establishes the importance of saliva…
Mucous cells are large cells with pale cytoplasm & peripherally displaced nucleus. They constitute > 10% of the population. They are cuboidal in shape and secrete sialomucin which is demonstrated by Alcian Blue or PAS staining, as mucous gets washed off during routine haematoxylin and eosin staining…
Under light microscope, mucous cells appear foamy (their content makes their cytoplasm appear so…). The multiple mucous droplets inside the cell impart cloudy or flocculent appearance to the complete cell as the cell membranes of mucous cells are sensitive to the fixation and anoxia produced during processing… After which, they coalesce into a single pool of mucous…
These cells then release mucous into the acini which then release the mucous into the lumen of the gland by removing the cap like portion of the acini…
Thus, there is flow of the mucous…
